Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder, whose primary manifestation is restricted and repetitive behaviors, associated with cognitive abnormalities. Many evidences support a link between cognitive deficits and social impairments in individuals with autism. No study has investigated the association of behavioral manifestations of autism with features of the skull. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether individuals with autism would have alterations in the cranial anatomy and/or differences in the anatomic morphology of the skull. The study population consisted of 49 participants, 25 with autism (1 woman and 24 men) and 24 controls (4 women and 20 men). Exclusion criteria were current use of medications that could affect the CNS and medical illness that could be related to the etiology of autism. The participants with autism were recruited from the outpatient services of a university hospital. The skull of each participant was scanned and measures of the size of the skull and of the volume of the brain were taken. There was no difference in size between the autistic and control groups (p > 0.05). Among individuals with autism, no association between severity of the disorder and cranial anatomy or brain volume was found. Individuals with autism did not differ from controls in terms of cranial anatomy and brain volume.Reported use of insulin analogs in an outpatient diabetes clinic.
Diabetes and its complications are chronic diseases, requiring long-term follow-up care. Several large studies have shown that good metabolic control decreases the risk of complications; therefore, many long-term care centers have instituted insulin analogs to ensure good control. The aim of this study was to determine the reported use of insulin analogs in the clinic population. Between April and June 2011, questionnaires were distributed to all members of the Northwestern Wisconsin Diabetes Association. Questions asked included age, gender, duration of diabetes, education, use of insulin analogs, and reasons for use. A total of 188 completed questionnaires were returned, for an overall response rate of 29.5% (188/646). Forty-four percent of participants were less than 60 years of age, be359ba680
