The Ballroom Story of Kidnapping, Redemption and Resilience, a film based on the book of the same title, tells the story of three young women who were kidnapped and taken hostage by Somali pirates in the summer of 2008. The film's budget is said to be $200 million, and was directed by Peter Berg.
Plot
The film begins in 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia, where the survivors of a hostage crisis are encouraged by a pastor to hold a meeting of remembrance and prayer for their dead. They discuss how they are coping with a new life in America, and speak about the dangers of gang activity and of inner city poverty. Following a song, the pastor urges the survivors to return to their life's mission: providing their children and communities with a better future.
The film then flashes forward to the following year, in the coastal city of Santa Monica, where a young woman, Leah (Ashley Judd) and her best friend, Hannah (Rachelle Lefevre) are preparing for their graduation from college. Their friend Maddy (Gabrielle Union), who is engaged to Leah's ex-boyfriend, is acting distant and distracted.
